We are actually gone see we have Sydney come back into the event to bring her greetings and then we will kick off this session. So Sydney The floor is yours.
Hello everyone. I hope you enjoyed that awesome mock lecture from my Spelman sister, Dr. Bass. She's absolutely amazing and has helped me a lot when I am in the health careers office. While y'all were in class, I was just sitting here reminiscing about when I got accepted into Spelman. I can actually remember like it was yesterday. It was December 30 2017. I just got home from school and was just checking my emails like I usually do. When I saw that a decision had been uploaded to my spell check Porter portal. My heart began to pound because Spelman had been my first choice and I was in middle school. My mom and my sister went to Spelman, so it was super important to me that I follow in their footsteps. When I saw the Congratulations, I didn't even read anything else before the tears started flowing. I called my mom and my sister into the room and shared the great news. And they both held me so tight that I could barely breathe. Before I knew it, we were all crying tears of joy. And I'm so happy that I've been accepted into Spelman. Although decision day was not until May 1 months away. I was so sold on Spellman already that I continue to read the acceptance letter to figure out what my next step were to secure my spot. I sent my admissions counselor a super long email with tons of questions about next steps, and she was extremely helpful in answering them. I'm sure you can all relate to what I was feeling because you are probably experienced that right now. It is exciting to get an acceptance letter to your dream school, but you may still have several lingering questions about the logistics of confirming your enrollment. This next session will address and answer those questions for you. Remember, you can always utilize your admissions counselors if you have any other questions. Now, I'm going to turn it over to Miss nyata Schuler and don't be asked your question. I'll see y'all later.
Awesome. Thank
you, Sydney. Thank you, Sydney. So once again, thank you everyone for joining us for day two of specimens Admitted Student events, spellbound the abbacy volume 140. Eastern Standard Time. during this session, you will have the opportunity to hear from many of our campus community members that will assist you with your transition to Spelman in your matriculation through Spelman as well. Before I turn it over, I'd like to share a few housekeeping items with you before we officially kick off today's session. So number one, this is a webinar therefore we cannot see the audience. But you can see panelists, guests can utilize the chat function to post questions that will be answered directly in the chat or address live. This session will be recorded and can be accessed via this platform by the end of the week. Additionally, in order to view today's agenda, you will select the program agenda button at the top of the event platform. So now without further ado, I will introduce you to dr. Baxter, who will kick off our our lineup of presentations for this session back to back so the floor is all yours.
Thank you very much. Good afternoon, everyone. And it is my pleasure to welcome you to Spellman. Hopefully you enjoyed the earlier session. And so now we're going to be very busy. And presenting what we have to share with you about your academic life at Spelman. I'm going to share this PowerPoint with you. Do you believe I have it here?
Okay.
Okay, Spelman and academic success. Okay, and I'm Geneva Baxter and I'm your first year Dean. So you will interact with me throughout your academic year at Spelman. And for many of you, you will interact with me maybe for four years, it just depends on your preference. Just to give you an overview of what I'll cover this afternoon, you'll get to meet the dean team or the Dream Team as some people like to refer to us. talk briefly about the liberal arts education, an overview of our majors and our minors and key programs. talk briefly about New Student Orientation and advising and of course, show you some sample schedules. Our dream team consists of our lead Dean Dr. Desiree peda. Slow Dr. Kimberlin Meili, who advises primarily juniors and sophomores and Miss Stacy Washington who works with everyone. Dean pedestal also works with everyone but primarily with seniors. You can find out more specific information about us by visiting us at academics Office of the Provost Office of Undergraduate Studies, that URL is posted on the bottom of the slide. a liberal arts education is your key to success. It doesn't matter whether you're going into the World War, you're going to professional school or you're going to graduate school, because of the information that you'll get from the various disciplines that you will traverse as you travel throughout the four years at Spelman, you will gain a broad base of knowledge that will prepare you to be competitive regardless of where you go in life. We have several majors from you for you to select from to be exact 32. And that doesn't include the independent major or the major for our peds students, who are Paul in the Drake scholars, you may choose art or you may decide that you want to major in music, sociology, French, you name it, the list is here and you can review it at your leisure. We also mirror the same minors. In addition, you can minor in the African diaspora in the World Food studies, and Asian Studies. Everything is listed here again, for you to view in your spare time. The programs that we have that are specialized program and that have gotten national attention, our curatorial studies program Honors Program, and you'll hear more about that later in the week. If not later today. I don't know exactly what time you're in. We have a special program for our first generation Scholars Program, and our domestic exchange and international exchange programs. Our study abroad, new student orientation, as I was previewing some of the questions that you asked, you had a lot of questions about the start of new orientation. Well, the date hasn't been announced yet. But as soon as it is it will be posted to the website, and you will be the first to find out about it. Expect to get an email notice prior to the posting, so that and that will probably come from admissions when we're going to launch our new student orientation. The activities will be similar to the ones in the past. And so you will have the academic side of campus as well as the CO curricular side of campus, all of the extracurricular activities. So there's a blending of activities for everyone advising whether we're doing it traditionally or virtually. That decision hasn't been made either and a lot is dependent on COVID and CTC you know where we are by the end of the summer. Once we have those dates, you will probably find that we will do a hybrid a combination of both so that even if you are on campus, you will be able to meet with your advisor whenever you want to in person in our office or his office or virtually. And when you meet with your advisor you will discuss your four year plan which will cover the disciplines that are listed here, as well as the number of hours that are needed for graduation anywhere from one you need 120 to be exact graduate. Here are sample plans of graduation plans. This PowerPoint will be available to you I will be available at the end to answer questions along with sending the PowerPoint. Thank you for your time.
Awesome. Awesome. Thank you, Dr. Baxter. So up next, we have been Bonnie Taylor, Dean of Students.
Good afternoon, everyone. Congratulations on your acceptance. And we're excited that you're here joining us today. If you give me just a moment, I will be sharing my screen. Awesome, I think we are good to go. So, again, my name is Dean Bonnie Taylor serve as the assistant vice president and the dean of students here at Spelman. Very excited to have you all here with us today, I'm gonna be sharing some information with you so that you are aware of the activities and the exciting new venture that you're going to be embarking upon with us here in the hall. So again, this is a couple things I do want to note, and this is going to impact your experience here for you on 911 is completely historical event. And that is important because it means that you are an entirely different generation than a great deal of us. So we will be sharing information and sharing experiences with each other with each other. You all are younger than the iPod SpongeBob Square Pants and text messaging, you're barely pre K, when YouTube and Twitter are launching, you're the first class to be completely virtual, given that COVID-19 has changed everything for you all for a great deal of you. You did not have an in person, senior year, we are aware of that. And given that you have not had that experience, we are taking that into account. We are making decisions in regards to this fall, how we're going to reopen and who we will be able to host on campus. Again, we're keeping health and safety Paramount as we make those decisions. So in the Division of Student Affairs, and that's where the Dean of Students Office is housed. We have quite a few different departments. We will talk about those in just one second. But I do want to talk about our leadership group is comprised of Dr. Darrell Holloman. He's Vice President for Student Affairs, comprised of Dr. Darrell Lowe. He's the Associate Vice President, he hosts and sees over the wellness area and I'll talk through what those different departments comprise of a little later. And again, I am over the Dean of Students Office and I'll discuss what departments fall under my purview in a moment. So comprised of quite a few different departments. bahner office of civic engagement is headed by Dr. Pillai excuse me by Miss Gilo Tisdale, that particular department really helps our students to understand community engagement and civic engagement. It's very important that we have students who are very civically minded, who understand the impact of their actions as well as their proactive actions on the community around them and allows us to connect with others in this AUC area. They also host community engagement activities that allow the students to be able to interface in different ways, whether it be through tutoring, whether that be through direct sustainability efforts, things of that nature, as they host those types of activities and help students to create and implement plans Counseling Center is headed by Dr. Vicki overland aid. She hosts a very talented team of folks who are mental health professionals who do assist our students during the type of crises or have the ability to provide ongoing support for students who may experience ongoing diagnoses. The Wisdom chapels, headed by Dr. Nisha Augie dree. She serves as the Dean of the chapel and heads up our spiritual life efforts and activities for our students. She allows our students to be able to explore their different opportunities of faith, as well as to celebrate their individual religious preferences and beliefs. Our Dining Services has a new director is Chris locker man who has been making many changes and actually has done a wonderful job with being able to convert our current facilities to COVID-19 friendly and health and safety protocol. guidelines excuse me, in hearing facilities, our students have been enjoying the dining services thus far and we look forward to when we're able to open fully and to really explore all of the different wonderful services that they do provide for our students. We do have several dining areas on campus, whether it be grab and go or full service dining hall opportunities. Health Services is headed by Mr. Lloyd who is a wonderful health professional and she leads a wonderful team of health professionals here on campus as well. She has done a tremendous job of leading these professionals and the campus in our health efforts as we navigate this COVID 19 time. This includes testing protocol for students currently, but also provides general services for students who are not experiencing issues related to COVID-19 and may just need some general health related guidance as well.
In addition to that you will be hearing from Allison Cummings a little later, she directs our housing reslife department has done a tremendous job and again, keeping our students safe currently, and we're looking forward to having a plan for the fall. Public Safety is headed by Steve browser serves as the director and they are state sanction police department but also provide general safety officers as well for our campus, our students and to make sure our campus is safe. They are on, on call and on campus. 24 seven to ensure that our campus is is made to be safe for our students. Student Access is headed by by the director of a marshal. Student Access really talks about the accommodations piece for students or if their students with learning disabilities, their students with any physical disabilities who may need help getting through campus and navigating campus as well as students who are experiencing some type of temporary physical impairment, they would be able to help a student navigate that issue. Student Conduct is managed by our Assistant Dean Silvia maddix, student life and engagement we'll talk to her a few more of those activities here in a moment. It's directed by Aisha Hudson, and our wellness center and recreation department is headed by Jermaine McCauley. So in the Division of Student Affairs, we cover quite a few things. If you look to the right and that screen there we have our new Miss Spellman and corporate 2021 and 2022. They were just recently selected. So we're super excited to congratulate Miss Russell, and to see what different initiatives she will bring forward for the 2122 school year. As we discussed earlier, the accommodations piece falls under student access and allows students who were experiencing any types of, again ongoing physical impairments or temporary physical impairments as well as learning disabilities and such to have the accommodations that they do need on campus for their academic experience, and for their out of class experience as well. We mentioned community civic engagement and health and wellness. Our wellness center on campus does provide different classes and opportunities for our students to engage in healthy practices, as well as any type of nutritional guidance and to look for mindfulness in their life as well. Miss Spellman in her court calls under our Office of Student Life and engagement. And we navigate that on count on campus housing experience with our residents, life staff, student activities and programming. There's so many opportunities for students to become engaged at different levels, student organizations falls under Office of Student Life and engagement as well and allows for our students to be able to participate in leadership and development through those opportunities in the student organizations as well as the find community in those different student organizations based upon their interests. The Student Government Association, and one of our premier leadership opportunities on campus falls under this area, and has recently selected Student Government Association President Gillian Jackson is a student who has been involved in student government from the very beginning from her first year, started in first year Council and moving on through so it's a wonderful opportunity if you're looking to become involved in student government association, the class councils are a wonderful opportunity to do that into parent to SGA. From there. And we also provide a study abroad experience for our students. That's on pause right now, just due to again, COVID-19. We're hoping to be able to re invigorate that program in 2022. And we'll have more information about that as soon as those details are finalized. But if that is an opportunity that student wants to engage in and outside of maybe an academic discipline, study abroad group, we're happy to have the conversation and to help them navigate that path.
Awesome. Thank you. Thank you so much. So we're wrapping up your presentation, but feel free to share your contact information. And then we will proceed with the next presentation.
And my contact information is right there on the screen dean of students@spelman.edu and you're welcome to call or email at your convenience.
Awesome. Thank
you. Thank you. So at this time, we are going to hear from Miss Allison Cummings with the Department of residence life. So Miss Cummings whenever you're ready.
There we go. Hello, welcome. We are so excited to have a few moments to share some information with you. I am Allison Cummings, Director of Housing and Residence Life on campus. And I just want to give you a little bit of information about who we are. We are student leaders who will be the resident advisors that live in the buildings with you and will help guide your experience as you move in and through The academic year, especially in your first year, we are resident directors who are full time staff who also live in the residence halls with you, because their presence, and their leadership and guidance of the buildings of your activities is critical, so that you know that there is someone available at all times 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we are the central office of which I am a part of in the central office, we are managing your room assignment process, which we will talk about in a minute, because I know that many of you are very anxious to find out how we're going to do that this year. We also manage many of the processes with technology, room changes, room reservations, in the residence halls and those kinds of things. So we're the less fun piece of Housing and Residence Life. The resident advisors and the resident directors are the ones who help support your safety and health in your residence hall. Some of that means they have to enforce our rules. So we strongly encourage you to take a look at the Community Living guide online as well as Bowman's Code of Conduct because we have to enforce those rules for your health and safety. But in managing health and safety, we're also planning programs and activities and trying to support your success. help you grow your wings get connected to the college, through various activities that the resident advisors will plan with and for you. What you can do with with in your residence hall is you can be a common part of our Community Leadership Council, which is a body and each residence hall that is elected that works with the Housing and Residence Life Office, and the residence hall Association, which is the broader body for the whole campus and all residence halls to plan programs and activities. We do save Trick or Treat when we can we do Easter icons for the local community when that is possible, of course when we are not living in a pandemic with the various restrictions.
So as I said, I know that you are all very anxious to hear about the housing process and how to secure your housing for next year. This is breaking news, you weren't the first to hear that we will be able to make the housing application available to you later this week. So what's your Spellman email for that go live announcement? What else do you need to know as Spelman typically has a two year live on requirement the first year and the second year of your college experience. Spelman requires students to move on but we are suspending that requirement this year. Because we know that there may be some families and some students who are not yet comfortable with living in a residence hall who want to maintain a virtual or hybrid experience. So there is no live on requirement this year. It may be reinstated for your second year. So again, there could be new rules next year, we will announce that when the time comes to think about your housing as a rising sophomore. But right now, if you do not want to live on campus, you do not have to and you do not have to ask to live off campus, you will simply not complete a housing application. And the housing application which is required if you want to live on campus is an expression of interest only, we cannot guarantee that you will receive housing. We cannot guarantee because we do not know yet how many students will be able to live on campus. The college is working diligently on exploring the options related to health and safety and how many students can live on campus next year. What will the calendar look like academically? When will you arrive? Dean Baxter already said we're not sure yet. But all of those decisions and conversations are happening. And as soon as we know you'll know. But if you are interested in living on campus, women housing application becomes available, you should complete the application to express that interest. If you are not 18 years old, there will be a section where your parent or guardian will have to also sign the application and particularly the housing leafs because if you're not 18, you legally cannot sign a contract which is essentially what this is. Finally, in the housing application. Initially, the first part of the application will only include your interest in living on campus and your agreement to our lease and a special addendum related to COVID-19 and the policies and rules about that right now. Immediately. You will not rank your billing preferences.
Until we know what residence halls we are using, that we can't tell you what to rank. So once all of those decisions are made, we will continue to communicate with you, we will let you rank the building preferences how you want to live, we will allow you to form a roommate group. If you want to indicate a preferred or desired roommate, assignment is not guaranteed preferences cannot guarantee but we do what we can to meet your preferences. You can find lots of information about the process about the residence halls about the things you are allowed to bring to campus. And the things that need to stay home. If you go to our website, which is showing on the screen spellman.edu forward slash housing. That's also where your housing dashboard is, which is where you will complete your housing application. There's some important information about living with a roommate many of you don't share rooms at home, I shared a room with two sisters because I'm one of six. But most of you are not living in a room with a sibling, let alone a stranger or someone else as you will when you join us on campus. And so there's some really good information there for you about that as well. Finally, if you have a medical need, I know this question has come up if you meet a certain kind of room. A good example is a student who has asthma that really needs to have an air conditioned room. There are limited number of air conditioned spaces on campus. So a student with a medical need will need to register with the Student Access Center. Their website is also on the screen. And a physician will need to provide documentation to the Student Access Center, Housing and Residence Life we do not want any of your private medical information. We work with other offices to know what we need to know. If you need an air conditioning room, the Student Access Center will tell us we will reach out we will make that happen. If you need a single room for a medical reason the Student Access Center will tell us and we will reach out and make that happen. So I will pause there in terms of the process. If you have questions, I'll be looking at the chat to respond to those. And you can reach Housing and Residence Life at spelman.edu. Always monitored by our professional staff to respond to your emails, and our office phone number which is being answered even though we are virtual. Sometimes you get voicemail because we're on a call, but we will definitely get back to you. So welcome to Spelman. We're glad you're here.
Awesome. So
I just want to take a minute to pause. A lot of there were a lot of questions. We know a lot of questions about housing. So we will be able to address some of them at the end. But of course, the conversation does not stop here. It does not stop today. We can assist you with those questions. So at this time to keep our presentations going. And then efforts to of course get to the formal q&a at the end. At this time, we are going to have Dr. Elena blash with the Student Success Center to provide her presentation and then we will end with our final students and patients.
Good afternoon, everybody. See my screen I'm attempting to share but of course.
Yes.
pologize I hope point. But good afternoon everybody. My name is Ash, I am the Associate of interim director of our Student Success Center here at Spelman College. And once is a of course that I'm going to share again because it did not work I probably
only be I want to share so much good information with you. is not working. Let's try one more time. Okay, let's do it from here since sharing it the other way. So I am the director of the Student Success Program here at Spa college. Excited with you all this afternoon. We're gonna talk about a few things in the time that I have left about what is student's success at Spelman learn about our team what we do talk about first year study groups. So how do we spell success at Spelman? Well obviously the first way we spell success is by students graduating. That is the ultimate end goal right you all are coming here because you want to be an alumna of Spelman College. So that is how we measure success. along the way. There are other milestones that we look at Your academic performance, your career preparation, are you interning? Are you having summer experiences? Are you building those competencies that will help you get ready for the workforce or professional graduate school? We want to take care of your financial well being make sure that you understand how you're paying for college and how you're beginning your life after Spelman. Are you involved in campus and community engagement, as Dr. Taylor mentioned before? And overall, are you satisfied with your Spellman experience, whether it be academic advising, or with your courses and your faculty? So all of this is kind of our magic recipe, our secret sauce as we talked about when it comes down to preparing students for graduation and being successful at Spelman College. So the Student Success Program really is an umbrella unit that oversees the academic support services on the campus. And our goal is to make sure that every student is realizing their full potential. We partner with various labs and centers and other programming on the campus. sure that that happens. This is our team. Miss Sloan and Miss Reese are two of our success advisors. And Dr. Clay is our program manager Miss Dixon is I manage administrative assistant, and I'm currently serving as the offices interim director.
Our primary goal is following Spellman strategic plan is to deliver on the Spelman promise, where we are a one stop shop that provides holistic advising, linkages to other campus resources and academic support. It's not necessarily one of the most popular offices on campus, because when students find that they have to ask for help. Sometimes my students shy away from that. But I can promise you that students who come to the students success and receive support from our office, find that it was valuable, and they're glad that they've done it. So what do we what do we do? Well, I really couldn't fit everything that we do on one slide or two slides. So this is a sampling of what we do we offer peer tutoring in just about every subject that's on campus. So when you start Spelman, if you're having a challenge, and you're at W course, or your math class, or you need help with a paper you're writing in English, our office can help you find a tutor on campus, we sponsor tutors on campus. And we also have various centers and labs like the writing program or the math lab that will also help and support you. And we provide teaching success advising where we will sit down and talk to students help you understand time management, how do you actually study what do you learn the best and link you to other resources on campus that you might be interested in. If you're interested in study abroad, or G stem or learning another language, our office could actually be that linkage for you. We offer something new this year in this virtual environment called our first year success study groups. And that was really exciting for us. And so for the parents that are eavesdropping. Our first year study groups were designed to help every first year Spelman students connect with a junior or senior a student of in class. And they were peer led clusters of about 10 to 1515 students, we had about 40 study groups on campus virtually meeting twice a week sending inspirational messages, theme based messages around career development, coursework, help, or academic support. And those success groups were very important fall semester. What we saw with those study groups is the more time a student attended a study group, the higher their GPA was for the fall semester. So I want you to think about that class of 2025. When you're coming this fall when you get assigned a study group, please make sure that you are attending. We offer several other programming our level of challenge was just a way for students to engage with the resources on campus, we hosted an office hour challenge where we encourage students to participate in faculty office hours, especially in this virtual environment to find ways to connect with their faculty meet their faculty that they you know they haven't seen physically in person, and also find a deeper way to engage with the coursework. The more students attend to office hours, the better they tend to do in their classes. What's next for you in the fall, you will take our students success pledge, which will highlight some key points to add into your success. You're going to attend faculty office hours when you join us in the fall participating in our activities and workshops, meeting with your first your study group, and most importantly, connect with your resources on campus. You are not here alone at Spelman when you join us in the fall. And we are definitely here to help and support you. You can reach us at via email at SSP at Spelman that edu or you can also follow us on Instagram at spell success with one ill spell success. I look forward to seeing you all in the fall. I can't wait for you to get here and meet you all congratulations on your acceptance to spell
awesome Let's start to flash. So at this time we are in the final two presentations and then we will open the floor for q&a. So at this time we are going to transition over to miss Dana and Lloyd.
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Spelman College. Let me share my screen here.
Okay.
So hello everyone. Again, my name is Dana Lloyd, and I am the director of the Student Health Services Department. So I'm going to briefly talk to you about the services that we offer in our department. This is just some of our contact information. And this is also on our web page on the Spelman web page. So you can get all this information from there as well, but just wanted to note it on this presentation. So our student health, sir,
go back, sorry.
So just to talk a little bit about the staffing. Our department is staffed by group of health professionals that consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, staff, nurses and many other healthcare specialists that are available to meet the healthcare needs of our Spelman students. The mission of our department is to help each student achieve maximum physical and emotional health so that each student can participate fully in the educational experiences offered by the college. Just wanted to talk to you all about some brief services that we offer and health services and we have two clinics that we run simultaneously. We have a primary care medical clinic, which is basically a clinic where we offer comprehensive medical services and this is a clinic that's very similar to your pediatricians office or either your family practice office, where we see students for acute and chronic illnesses like colds and flus and stomach aches. We also see students who have diabetes and hypertension and some other chronic illnesses. Secondly, we have a women's health clinic which actually functions like a gynecologist office, we're doing routine and urgent gynecological services in that clinic. We do pap smears breast exams, we can do STI x, sexually transmitted infection screenings. And we also do contraceptive counseling in that clinic as well. In our primary care clinic, because we have a lot of students who have asthma and allergies, we offer inhalation therapy, which is where we do breathing treatments. We also have a dietician on staff. That's very helpful for our students who are have special diets, some of our students who are vegetarians pescatarians, or have different personal diets. And we also utilize our dietician for students who have medical diets. There's some students who have special conditions that require a dietician to give them specialized diets like our diabetics, and a variety of other chronic conditions. In our office, we offer a lot of health education, of course, we have many brochures and pamphlets, we offer health programs, we have a pure education group called shape, which stands for Student Health associates impure educators. And they are basically liaison to our students where they educate our students, they have health programs, we offer health fairs. And then we just educate our students as they come in about different conditions so that we are partners with our students. And we want you guys to be educated about the different conditions that you're diagnosed with, so that you understand and most the time when you understand what's going on, you're more compliant with it with the medical plan. We also have a lab in house where we can draw labs. We don't actually run the labs in our office, but we work with labcorp. And that's the service that we use. There are some quick tests that we can do a rapid test that we can do right now we're doing rapid COVID test. We can also do rapid strep test, rapid influenza test. So there's some things that we can quickly find out while you're in the office. So that's just a brief synopsis of some of the services that we offer and our health services department. Because of the time that we're in with a pandemic, we want to be able to service all of our students so we know that we have some students that are virtual. We can do telehealth visits for our students residing in Georgia. We also try to provide medical advice for our students who are not in Georgia and just have medical conditions that they want advice about. We can also prescribe medications for continuity of care. We refer out to specialists when there's a need And then of course, we're here to provide education and guide our students during this time of COVID-19.
just also wanted to mention, there are some requirements for all of our students, all of our students have to meet the medical requirements. And they'll all those requirements are actually found on our web page. But just briefly to talk about a few of the things that students have to submit, and you submit these things through our student portal, we have required immunizations that have to be submitted through their portal, all students have to have a physical and this is a very brief physical, they also required to complete a form that gives us the end of the treat them a consent form to treat. And then lastly is a TVs questionnaire. Health insurance is also very important, all of our students are required to have health insurance. For students who currently have a health insurance plan through their parents, you have the opportunity to opt out of the Spelman plan, but you have to go to the waiver site, which is also located on our Spelman web page. So definitely go to that web page, the site is open now, you have to opt out of the insurance if you do not opt out, then students will automatically be charged for this billing and sponsored insurance plan. So that's pretty much all that I have. I will be around for questions later.
Thank you.
Thank you so much. And at this time, we are going to wrap up the presentation portion of this session with Mr. Harold Bell with career planning in development. So Mr. Bell, feel free to take it away.
Alrighty, thank you very much and Welcome, everyone. Welcome to Spelman is excited to have you the Office of Career Planning and Development. I want you to think about this. When you think about all of our office, there's a saying that goes begin with the end in mind. And so when you think about four years later, after you're leaving Spelman, I know it's hard to remember believe that right now, but it'll go fast. There's an expectation that you have on the other side of Spelman, and that is to have a fabulous opportunity waiting for you upon graduation, we are the office that's going to help you achieve that fabulous opportunity as you leave Spelman, and so we have a variety of ways that we help you to do that. And so you'll see a lot of things that goes on with this office. So we're gonna go through a few of the things that we do in the office to help you reach that goal that lies at the end of your journey itself.
So I use this across stick and I use the word career because it makes it easy to remember. And I'm going to go through you what our services are through our office to give you a good understanding of what that is. So the CEUs for counseling. So we realize that many of you may not even know what you want to do yet. And that's not uncommon, by the way, you shouldn't feel any pressure because I'm coming to Spelman, I don't necessarily have a linear path to what I want to do, actually, that's normal. And so and it's okay, if you do No, but we've have career counselors on staff to assist you to talk about your career, to talk about different opportunities that's associated with your career, and to help you navigate that whole landscape. And so you don't have to feel like it's something that you have to do on your own or try to figure out there are actually people on campus assigned to you by major to assist you and helping you to think through and develop what those thought patterns might be or what those goals and visions might be for you. One of the things we use getting to the A to help us do that is we use a tool. And our tool is called assessment. assessments are really great tools and helping you to evaluate what your values are the things that you like, things that you don't like, the things that you like to do, what interests you what skills that you have, assessments are very good at pooling all of those things together, and then providing you with potential paths to different types of careers. And so there's a particular one we use called focus, we can talk about that at another time. But that can really help with really kind of pulling in a lot of information and helping you determine what that particular path might be. And then the are we have very lots of resources that we use to assist you in making these connections, facilitating relationships, exposing yourself to opportunities, the big the big one I want to talk about here is a platform we call handshake. It's the number one platform in the country for connecting students with opportunity. Over 1100 schools in the country habit. over a half million employers are in the actual database. And so we have other resources as well but that's our bread and butter if you will and that one will help you make fenomenal connections, it'll help facilitate interviewing with different organizations, you can see events that we sponsor in the handshake resource. And so that's an example of resources. And then we have the first events. And so one of the things you're going to see your mind is going to be blown. Let me prepare you what you're about to see when you come to Spelman, you have never seen anywhere, anything before coming to Spelman. We provide exceptional events when it comes to careers as the number one HBCU in the country, we attract all the number one employers in the country, all the top graduate schools in the country, and then all the ones that come up under them, they come to Spelman, mark my words, you've never seen anything like this before in your life. And so you will have access to events like career fairs, large career fairs with 400 employers, large grad school fairs with 300 grad schools, lots of what we call information sessions that we offer, that you'll have access to, you'll also have access to things like mock interviews, that will, you know, assist you in helping improve your interviewing skills. Okay, so there's lots of different events that we offer, that you will have an opportunity to engage and find out more information. And like I said, it's nothing like you've ever seen before, you can't even imagine it right now. But when you get here, you're going to be like, Oh, my goodness, I did not even know. The second E is experience experiential learning. experiential learning is you actually go out and you learn like in an internship, you observe you participate, okay? It's something outside of the classroom, usually like an internship or research experience. And so you can internship with organizations like Coke, Google, Apple,
Procter and Gamble, I mean, I can go on and on and on with the list as well as a lot. You can do research opportunities with graduate school, and in particular research area that might be related to your major. And so we provide those opportunities for you to have access. And then finally, the last RS relationships, probably the most difficult part of a career process is how do I connect with the people? How do I form relationships with the people that can help me accomplish the goals that I'm trying to achieve? Well, we do it for you. We bring it right to you, whether it's virtual on campus, wherever we are in the fall, we'll bring those relationships to you. All we ask you to do is show up and engage the people that are trying to engage with you. easy way to get in contact with us is right there. cpd@spelman.edu. We'd love to hear from you. We love to work with you. Looking forward to working with you. And thank you again, for coming today.
Perfect, perfect. Thank you, Mr. Bell. So at this time, we have reached the formal q&a portion of this session. And so what that means is now's the time to ask questions. So if you haven't submitted questions, feel free to do so in the chat. We will answer as many as we can in the seven or so minutes that we have left before we close. So I do want to pose a few questions, preliminary questions that we received, and they were received from several students. And this is more sell to Dr. Lloyd for health services. So we've received questions about the process for opting out of specimens health insurance, and also how Spelman assist students with health issues or food allergies, what what sort of.
So
with regards to the opting out of the health insurance plan, it is there is a tab on our website. The company that we use is called ACI, but there's a link on our website that the students can access in order to opt out of the insurance plan. With regards to allergies, the last question I am sorry, was regarding allergies and how we
apply. The question is how to spot and assist students with health issues or food allergies, what resources are available to them.
So we do as we first and foremost want students to self identify so we know who you are, we can have you first work with our dietitian to see you know, to make sure that they are on the right track as far as eating the right foods. We also have our student access department that comes into play as well to kind of make sure that
they
in case they need certain things within the residence halls because they need certain food foods. They have to get clearance through our student access department and so they would have to get information from their doctors if they're not current students have course, they would have to get information from their doctors documenting those medical conditions, and then report that information to our student access department. And then they'll work with them as far as making sure you know, they have their their needs met with, of course to make sure they get the appropriate meals.
Thank you. Thank you. So students guess I'm trying to move quickly through some of the Hot Topic questions that you had. And then the next set of questions is questions related to NSL, as well as academic advising. So I'm going to bring dr. Baxter into the conversation for this. So that the Baxter we've received questions about NSL. So just a general overview of NSO, and the process for students meeting with their academic advisors for the very first time. So if you can talk through those two concepts,
okay, and so students arrive on campus, and when they arrive on campus war, they sign in virtually whatever the process is of a first get acclimated to their residential halls. And the first day or so wouldn't be spent doing that. And then they have testing, they do pre testing for their map placement and their foreign language placement. After they have their language placement. There may be some seminars or some sessions academic sessions that they can attend. Otherwise, there are other sessions that student life and engagement will sponsor, they'll meet with people from financial aid to answer their question. I think Mr. Bell has a session that he has with them as well. They'll meet with counseling services and the Student Access Center. So basically, Student Success Center as well. They meet with all of the support systems that we have on campus doing is so and any pretest that they need they get, they also get to visit the library to find out what services are available there. As far as I think there was a question about dual enrollment that I meant to answer students have transfer in credits. If you have not used those credits for your high school graduation, and they're coming in from an accredited college or junior or community college, you can receive credit for those courses. They're evaluated by the registrar's office. So you have to have an unofficial transcript sent it cannot be delivered by you or mailed by you. It has to come from that registrar's office to our registrar's office and Was there another way of advising they get their advisor, you will be assigned an academic advisor when you get here is typically someone who is in the discipline that you have indicated as major or you'll have a general advisor, someone who's a veteran and who understands the general core requirements. Basically, the first year and a half are spent taking general electives.
Perfect, thank you. Thank you. I know we're coming to up to the very end of this q&a portion. So I'm going to pose another question or two, and then we will close out today's session. So there are several questions that we receive preliminary questions about bringing a vehicle to campus public transportation options, so shuttle transportation options, and then security on campus. So for these questions, I will start out with being Taylor, if you can actually talk to our students and guests about bringing a vehicle to campus. How much transportation are shuttle opportunities for students, and then security on campus as well?
Absolutely. So in terms of vehicles on campus, first year, students are not permitted to have vehicles on campus, The only exceptions would be made would be those who qualify for an exception that is granted through our student access office. And that would be denoting any specific type of accommodation that needs to be made. So if there's any questions about that, past that point, you're welcome to inquire to the Dean of Students Office, the Dean of students@spelman.edu. And I would be happy to talk about any specific cases that do come up. In terms of shuttles there is a an AUC shuttle, that would that maintains rounds around the AC center, mainly the library, there is one that would make some infrequent visits to Walmart, that's on MLK, as well as to other small areas in the AU center. So students need to get around that way, and either have mobility issues or are concerned about maybe lateness of the day. They're Welcome to participate in that as well. There are other students who participate in rideshare apps, they're welcome to do so as well as their other students that they may be able to find transportation with if there's friends that are applying vehicles on campus in terms of safety on campus. As I mentioned before, we do have our public safety officers in our campus police officers who are on campus 24 seven, who are at each gate to maintain the safety they do restrict access to the campus, there does need to be a reason for an individual to access campus. The beauty of being Spelman College is that we do have that gate access entry. It's one of the few in the AU center. So it does limit the individuals who do have access to campus itself. If students are concerned about getting round and you center or maybe it's later than anticipated and the shuttle may have stopped running, they are still able to request any type of assistance for transportation from our campus safety officers as well who are still there to make sure that our campus is safe. If there's any other additional questions in regards to campus, safety shuttles, vehicles on campus or anything of the like, please again, feel free to email dean of students@spelman.edu. And I'd be happy to answer those for you.
Thank you. So this brings us to the end of the q&a portion of this session. At this time. I'm going to pass it over to my colleague Miss Gabrielle boy to close out this session. Thank you again to our panelists. And without further ado, Miss boy, take it away.
Thank you. And thank you for joining us for The what to expect after you except we hope that your time was well spent and that you learn important information that will assist you in making your decision to become a Spellman I
